How Chemicals Sneak Inside Your Home

Did you know that you might be bringing toxic chemicals into your home without even realizing it? Do Your Part to know what’s lurking inside your home and how to make smart swaps.

A big contributor to indoor air pollution is chemical based cleaners. Your best bet is to have a green cleaning kit which includes white vinegar – a natural disinfectant, baking soda – a powerful all purpose cleaner, and borax which can kill mold. Or, shop for plant based cleaners.

Next up – furniture. Some of those popular and affordable pieces made from MDF – actually contain a formaldehyde-based resin – which will pollute your home slowly for many years. Shopping for high quality used furniture is a good alternative and so is looking for products which specifically say formaldehyde free.

And, have you ever stopped to think what the dog dragged in? It’s not only dirt but also toxic debris such as lawn chemicals, automotive fluids, and pesticides. A door mat will help. And wiping your dog’s paws after lawn treatments is ideal. And remember, to take your shoes off around the house too!

Now to those problematic plastics. Polyvinyl chloride – or PVC – is used in vinyl shower curtains, children’s toys, and food containers. The ingredients used to make the soft and flexible are now being linked to health problems. The safest way to go is to avoid all plastics labeled #3.

Finally, find safer ways to dry clean your clothes. Many dry cleaners use a toxic chemical known as perc. Visit green dry cleaners or opt for perc-free do it yourself kits to get clothes clean. If you do visit a dry cleaner, air out your clothes before hanging them up.
When you Do Your Part to clean up the air inside your home – everyone will breathe easier.
